About the game:

This one is way off the edge of the board. In fact, there isn't even a board! (The powers that be at Board's Edge Games are hoping this does not become a trend. Then what will we name our company?)

The best part of a no-board game is that setup time is zero. The game begins when the first piece is laid down. As the subsequent pieces are placed this forms a pattern that becomes the playing surface (the pieces themselves become the board). Unlike other such games, the pieces are never eliminated and not all have to be played. The object of the game is to totally surround your opponent's queen, while at the same time trying to block your opponent from doing likewise to your queen. The player to totally surround his opponent's queen wins the game.

Hive is known as an abstract strategy game (like chess, where the theme and backstory are minimal and the game focuses purely on the mechanics). And it's one of the most addictive. As a bonus, even if you don't need a theme to play, don't we all just love our precious pollinators? This game feels even more timely today than it did when it was released.

Hive for Kids:

The box says players 9 and up, but moms we talked to think this game works just as well for somewhat younger kids. There's no board to this one, and the tiles are durable, easy to grasp, and fun to move around in different combinations. Younger kids will enjoy free play with the tiles, while older kids and adults will enjoy the strategy of the game. The strategy aspect of the game is similar to chess, but the game only lasts 10-20 minutes. We think is the perfect amount of time for kids who are developing strategic thinking. You learn from your mistakes, innovate and adapt, and try something new next game (as opposed to chess, which can be punishing for new players).

The best part is, this game is light and portable. Instead of a big box and a board, the tiles come in a portable zip bag. Bring it anywhere - even the waiting room of the doctors office, or the airport lounge. As one mom said, "so much better than handing them the iPad."

Why we chose this for Board's Edge Games:
  • Strategy - this game gets you thinking
  • 2-player - Works great for two players (not all games do!), and only two players
  • Recommended by moms in our annual poll. One of our Top 5 Games for your littlest gamer.
