Quick Takes: 2-4 players 30 minutes Ages 13+ (slightly more complex or takes longer than the classics we all think of)
In Dominion, you play as a monarch who wants to expand your kingdom into the unclaimed lands around you. You want a Dominion! Unfortunately, you aren't the only one. Several other monarchs have had the exact same idea. You must race to get as much of the unclaimed land as possible, fending them off along the way. To do this you will hire minions, construct buildings, spruce up your castle, and fill the coffers of your treasury. How? Each aspiring Napoleon/Lannister/Targaryen/Caesar (insert your favorite land-grabbing monarch here) starts with an identical, very small deck of cards. In the center of the table is a selection of other cards the players can "buy" as they can afford them. There is a great deal of strategy involved in buying cards, playing hands, and constructing the deck to gain victory points.
Board's Edge Games carries the second edition of this game. There are also lots and lots of expansions available (add-ons that use this main game but have additional cards, objectives, rules, etc.), but this is the game to start with. There are millions of different combinations that can be played just with Dominion alone.
Quick tips from Board's Edge Games when you open the box: DO NOT SHUFFLE THE CARDS! We repeat, do NOT shuffle the cards. They arrive in alphabetical order, and they get sorted into the card tray in alphabetical order. Also, plan for an extra 30 minutes for your initial setup. Once you get through the first setup, all subsequent rounds are very fast.
