Quick Takes: 2-5 players 30-45 minutes Ages 10+ Level 1 (easy to learn, easy to play, and FUN!)
Oh no, Harry! You got caught in the Restricted Section of the library... well, not quite. Yes, there's a magic school library and some after-hours hijinx involved, but this isn't set at Hogwarts. Welcome to Atheneum: Mystic Library.
In Atheneum, players are magic school kids who got caught sneaking into the library and have to put away all the books to get out of trouble. We admit that detention is an odd theme for a game, but it works surprisingly well. The gameplay loop is quite simple, so kids can pick it up quickly. We love that Atheneum allows for simultaneous play, so all players choose and reveal cards together and then perform their player actions at the same time. No down time between turns cuts down on boredom (and sneak peeks at the phone). Score points by placing books on your shelves to fulfill objectives, collecting decorative candles, and collecting books from your favorite subjects. At the end of the game, the player with the most points wins!
Parents, we think that this game can be played with kids a little bit younger than the 10-and-up age range listed on the box. It's easy to understand how to play, especially if your kids have played a drafting-style game like Sushi Go!
- Family friendly game! Satisfying but not too complicated = fun for the whole family
- As huge bookworms, we love the library theme
- We love the funny titles of the books! Who wouldn't want to read My Date with Bigfoot or Oberon is a Poser??
- Simultaneous play means no downtime
