We really love this one for game night, especially with a mixed crowd of game player pros and newbies. The rules are very straightforward and similar in nature to other party card games, so play can get started quickly. When the Board's Edge Games team shares this game with friends, we just dive right in and go through the rules as we play.
In the game, each player has six cards with lovely artwork but no words. Players take turns as the storyteller who selects a card from their hand and then uses one sentence (out loud) to describe the artwork. All the other players then pick a card from their hand that best matches the storyteller's sentence. All of the cards go face down in the middle and each player has to guess which card the storyteller played. The storyteller earns points when their card is guessed correctly but not too correctly - if everyone guesses the storyteller's card, they are awarded zero points! Points on incorrect guesses are awarded to the player who played that card. If no one guesses the storyteller's card than everyone else is awarded 2 points. As you can see, this is just complex enough to keep a group entertained (and start them psychoanalyzing their friends!)
The game box has this one pegged for ages 8 and up, but the Board's Edge Games team thinks that younger kids can play and win too. We've had a blast playing this with kindergartners - the only thing you may want to do is screen out a couple of the cards with monsters on them before you get going.
Love the game? Try Mysterium with slightly older kids, which has a similar style to Dixit but adds a CLUE-style murder mystery story-line.
Why we chose this game for Board's Edge:
- Simplicity - easy setup, quick learning curve
- Beauty - the artwork on the cards is really a pleasure to behold
- Fast play - great for a game night nightcap or warm-up
- Kids can beat the parents (ask us how we know)!
