Quick Takes: 3-5 players 60 minutes per round; 15+ rounds for a full campaign Ages 14 Level 2 (Ready for a new challenge? Try this mid-weight game which introduces legacy and campaign games without complicated rules.)
The King is dead. Long live the King. In The King's Dilemma, you and your fellow players represent a Council of the various houses leading the government of the fictional kingdom of Ankist. Each round of the game acts as a generation in the kingdom - at the end of the round, the king dies and a new king takes his place. The next generation of your family's houses have to pick up where the last generation left off, good or bad.
Each game round, you draw the first card from the "Dilemma Deck" and experience the game story as it unfolds. Your Council must resolve the dilemma on the King's behalf by voting on various actions in the story - but don't mistake this for a cooperative game. Instead, it works more like the court of Henry VIII or Game of Thrones, where Council members scheme for power and influence while driving policy that affects everyone. You only get one opportunity to make a decision on each dilemma. This may lead you down the path of war, famine, or riot. Or it may not - your choices could bring about wealth, peace, and prosperity. Every action has consequences. Consider yours carefully.
This game features lots of new twists for more advanced gamers, like legacy storylines (where your decisions in past games impact your play in the current game), more than 15 hours of branching storylines (not in one go!), and an evolving deck of event cards. It's highly interactive, and it requires a commitment from your group of players. It's also surprisingly approachable, so it worked with our own game group of mixed game newbies and advanced players. A "campaign" - seeing the whole story through from beginning to end - takes more than 15 rounds of 45-60 minutes each. If you're looking for a new adventure for your regular game group, we highly suggest The King's Dilemma.
